LI: To write a poem

Monday

Watch the video. https://www.literacyshed.com/uploads/1/2/5/7/12572836/junk__2011__award-winning_animation_hd_616.mp4

The story of Jasper O'Leary is written as a poem with rhyming couplets:

A rhyming couplet is a pair of successive lines in a poem, where the final words of each line rhyme with one another.

Have a look at the story now; can you see the words that rhyme at the end of each line? Circle the pairs of words in the same colour, colour each rhyme a different colour.

Junk

If Jasper O'Leary excelled at one thing

when it came to junk food, he was clearly the king.

In his teens he found less healthy things for his plate.

He'd eat butter with lard and drink vinegar straight!

And this is when Jasper got really bizarre.

Like eating car tyres dipped in piping hot tar.

His reputation for junk food just couldn't be tarnished.

Like Jackhammer soup with a barbed wire garnish.

His doctor said:

Son, let us pray for your health.

So he tried salad once but it just burned his mouth!

So he stuck with the junk, and made a new goal.

To swallow an oil tanker's cargo hold whole!

The day that he died saw a closed cemetery.

This is no place for old Jasper O'Leary!

So they took him elsewhere on that night cold and grim.

To the outskirts of town. To a place just for him.

Yes, they took him elsewhere. Then they read his last rites.

It's the junkyard  where Jasper now spends his nights.

Tuesday

What do you like to eat?

Do you eat strange things?

Could you take some of your favourite foods and mix them up to make something disgusting like a cheese and chocolate sandwich?

You could think of foods that you really don't like and include them too.

The more revolting the better!

Start by thinking of some disgusting food ideas and write them down.

strawberry jelly pizza

beef burger with custard

chocolate cake with mustard

sprout flavoured ice-cream

jam and bacon sandwich

sausage and banana pie

jacket potato with chocolate mousse

cabbage flavoured doughnuts

Wednesday

Now go back to your foods and try to find words that rhyme with the ending and write them at the end of the line.

pizza with strawberry jelly – smelly, welly, belly, telly

gravy and crumble – tumble, rumble, nimble

beef burger with custard- hard, mustard, shard

chocolate cake with mustard- hard, custard, shard

sprout flavoured ice-cream- dream, cream, seam,

jam and bacon sandwich- witch, which, stitch

sausage and banana pie- lie, die, try, my, fly, reply

jacket potato with chocolate mousse- loose, truce, noose, choose

cabbage flavoured doughnuts- cuts, nuts, buts, huts, shuts

Thursday

-comma at the end of first line of each pair

-full stop at the end of the second line of the pair

I love to eat food, day and night,

But people they say, my choices aren't right.

For breakfast I like a beef burger with custard,

Followed by a slice of chocolate cake and mustard.

By 11am, my tummy starts to rumble,

What is better than sausage and banana crumble?

Lunch is my favourite, jacket potato with chocolate mousse,

After that sprout ice-cream is the flavour I choose.

Tea time is always pizza with strawberry jelly,

I gobble it up to fill my belly.

A jam and bacon sandwich before I go to bed,

I like to have a sleep but I'd rather eat instead!

Friday

Edit it to improve it.

I love to eat food, day and night,

But people they say, my choices aren't right.
