The end of a long week 1!

Everyone survived their first week in year 5 (children AND adults)!

This week we focused on settling back into school routines, wellbeing and preparing for the year ahead. The children have come back excited and happy, and has been wonderful to have a full classroom again.

Monday and Tuesday - Our first days back involved lots of reflecting on our time away from school and getting to know you activities, going through our new routines in school, outside games and craft activities (Dream Catchers and Family Shields)

Wednesday - Thank you to everyone who arrived in school in their P.E kit for our first P.E day. Remember those jogging bottoms and jumpers for the imminent winter! The children began to show off their writing to us with some letters to our 'future selves' setting goals and ambitions for the year ahead. In the afternoon the children learnt the skills to play Hand Tennis.

Thursday - The children were able to explore a range of stories from 'The book of hope', a book of short stories celebrating the Key Workers through the lockdown period, and explored some of their favourite stories too. Using the stimulus of 'The great realisation' poem, the children were able to reflect on their own time in lockdown and think about how this period of time will affect our lives into the future. In history, the children explored the history of the NHS and created some historical sources to show how children have felt during these times.

Friday - The children continued their work with the book of hope and their letters to their future self. In science, we focused on how the brain helps us learn and how we can become better learners with a growth mindset. The children had the chance to observe (see, smell and touch) a lamb's brain and link the aspects they could see, and how the brain functions - See pictures below!! We also explored how we can practise and adopt a positive growth mindset to help us be successful learners this year!

Overall, a jam packed first week which the children have taken to extremely well. Both Mr Allington and Mr Simmons have enjoyed our first week with the classes and are looking forward to a successful, positive and enjoyable year in Year 5!
